2326 The determination of the serum complement mediated immune complex solubilizing capacity for the patients with eales' disease

PRCR~RR Idiopathic retinal vasculitis (RV) is a sightthreatening disease that affects young adults. We have found that serum soluble intracellular adhesion molecule-l (fICAM-1) levels are raised in RV patients,with active ;;:;ffe compared with controls and with quiescent disease The aim of this study was to determine whether urinary neopterin:creatinine ratios correlate with sICAM levels in RV. &$(I&.s Ten RV patients were recruited, all of whom had active disease and were off systemic treatment. Ten healthy ageand sex-matched controls klere also studied. Serum was collected from each individual and stored at -70% until analysis. Urine samples were collected and stored in the dark at 4'C. Serum sICAl-1 levels were tested by commercial ELISA kit (RID); urine neopterin:creatinine ratios were determined by HPLC. &5g& Urinary neopterin:creatinine ratios were significantly higher in RV patients compared with healthy controls: 229tGO and 170t62: T test. ~=0.03. sICAM-1 levels were also significantly higher in RV patients compared with healthy controls; Mann Whitney U, p-0.001. SICK-1 levels correlated significantly with neopterin: creatinine ratios for the RV oatients: Wilcoxon rank test. 0=0.005. Conclusions'Urinary neopterin:creatinine ratios are significantly higher in RV patients than in controls, and also correlate with serum sICACI-1 levels, which are associated with disease activity. Urinary neopterin: creatinine levels may be a simple, non-invasive and effective means of monitoring disease activity in RV.
